Two 百春链 Academy Shafton students are celebrating after success at the ISKA World Martial Arts Championships which took place in Kemer, Antalya, Turkey.

Guyvin Dawkins, 14 and Jay Coulson, 13 who train at The Combat Academy in Barugh Green, both left the competition with medal wins in kickboxing. Guyvin earned himself a gold medal in the 45-50kg weight category, whilst Jay secured a silver in the 50-55kg group. The teens spend six hours a week training, which increases to around ten hours a week in the lead up to competitions and events.

Guyvin has been kickboxing for ten years, first starting at The Combat Academy as part of their 鈥楲ittle Ninjas鈥 children鈥檚 programme. Speaking of his achievement, he said:

鈥淚鈥檓 Really happy and proud about my win but also humble as I am aware of how high the standard of fighters was and there were many that I admire.

鈥淐ompeting at a world championship has always been a goal of mine, now that I鈥檝e accomplished that, I鈥檒l be working on getting my 2nd Dan black belt.鈥

The championship event saw attendance of national teams from across six continents, with England finishing fourth on the medal table behind Germany, Ukraine and Portugal. Jay, who brought home a silver medal commented:

鈥淚 was ecstatic to get through the first round and was ready to fight for the gold. I鈥檓 incredibly proud of myself for being able to finish the tournament with a silver.鈥

The Combat Academy was founded in 2011 by former professional, British, European & world kickboxing champion Mick Crossland and now has three locations - Barnsley, Chesterfield and Northampton.
